In the age of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) where financial partnerships are still new and exciting, players are bound to make spending mistakes. Now, more than ever, it’s essential that athletes have the right mindset regarding their earnings and how to handle them.

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver and defensive back Travis Hunter is capitalizing on this new era by partnering with NerdWallet.

NerdWallet is a finance platform that helps individuals make financial decisions. The website and app assists users with budget tracking, credit score monitoring, and product recommendations and transactions.

Hunter makes history

“NerdWallet is committed to championing the Smartest NIL Deal Ever as a better way to set athletes up for long-term financial success, and we are so happy that Travis Hunter is our first NCAA football partner,” said Alison McCoy, vice president of brand marketing at NerdWallet.

“Travis represents the modern, savvy athlete who wants information and guidance to plan for a smart financial future,” she continued. “This type of evolved NIL deal is greatly needed in sports, and we’re thrilled to see Travis make the thoughtful decision to build his savings account as part of our NIL deal.”

Hunter joins USC point guard JuJu Watkins and NBA point guard Rob Dillingham (Minnesota Timberwolves) as ambassadors for the brand.

Terms of the agreement

NerdWallet required Hunter to choose between three smart money action plans. After evaluating his finances, he decided to put 20% of the money he earns from NIL into a savings account, Front Office Sports reports.

“Preparation is the key to success both on and off the field, and I’m excited to plan for a strong financial future with the help of NerdWallet,” stated Hunter. “The opportunity to earn and be smarter with managing my NIL money in the right bank account while playing football was too good to pass up.”

The deal doesn’t just benefit the dual-threat athlete, though. You could also included in this partnership.

“What’s special about the latest installment of the ‘Smartest NIL Deal Ever’ featuring Colorado’s Travis Hunter is the 1 of 1 collectible trading card that one lucky winner will receive,” said Max Pollak, creative director of the campaign. “It has an actual piece of the contract inside of the card, commemorating Travis’ commitment to putting 20% of his earnings into savings,” Little Black Book reports.

Fans don’t have to purchase anything to win the card. They must comment on Hunter’s September 20 Instagram post, tag a friend, and use the #NerdWalletsweeps hashtag before the contest ends on September 26.

Hunter’s huge portfolio

Hunter has several other unique deals aside from his partnership with NerdWallet. Hunter was the first college football player to partner with popular stuffed animal brand Squishmallows. He was also the first ambassador for Michael Strahan’s lifestyle and clothing brand.

Hunter has worked with brands ranging from United Airlines to Buffalo Wild Wings to Celsius, demonstrating his wide range of marketability.

It’s only Week 5 for college football, so Hunter will likely garner even more interesting deals before the season’s out.
