Germie Bernard Changes the Complexion of an Offense

Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard can line up out wide. He can line up inside in the slot. I saw him line up in the backfield and take a direct snap in the Wildcat.
What’s the moral of the story?
Bernard demonstrated he can do a lot of things on his 2025 game film.
What does that do?
It increases his value in the 2026 NFL Draft.
What else does his versatility do?
It gives an offense more play-calling options. It gives defenses more to prepare for.
What’s Bernard going to do on the next play?
Is he going to run a route?
Is he going to motion in for a handoff?
Will be involved in a trick play of some sort?
Is he going to throw it?
Yeah…
It’s important to note that Bernard dabbled in playing quarterback in high school. During his college career, Bernard was 3-for-3 for 29 yards passing. Additionally, he had 36 carries for 184 yards and five touchdowns rushing.
Proved to be a challenging evaluation
No question ⎯
Bernard doesn’t check all the neat little boxes.
He has decent speed, athletic ability, catch radius, and hands.
Um, that doesn’t sound that special…
It’s not.
But the rest of his game is.
Tell me more
It felt like Bernard was the “go-to receiver” in Alabama’s offense as I was studying his game film.
Turns out he was.
Bernard was the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver. He hauled in 64 receptions for 862 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was actually targeted 111 times for a catch rate of 57.7%. That’s a little lower than I was hoping it was going to be, but at the same time, I saw how off-the-mark many of those passes were from Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.
So, I’m going to continue blowing through the yellow lights on this one.
🚦
What’s his route running like?
Bernard destroys off-man and zone pass coverage. Off-man is when a cornerback is matched up on a receiver a few yards off the line of scrimmage pre-snap. Zone coverage is when defenders are assigned to cover a certain area of the field instead of specific offensive skill players.
Give Bernard an inch, and he’ll take a mile.
He’s instinctual. He can find the necessary space to get open, and he often finds it.
How’s Bernard against press-man coverage? Press-man is when a cornerback is lined right up on a receiver pre-snap and assigned to match him step-for-step.
So-so.
Can he win against press-man coverage?
Yes.
How?
- Gets physical with cornerbacks
- Flattens out routes and boxes cornerbacks out with his strong frame
YAC
*Stands for “yardage after catch.”
And this is really where Bernard excels.
And that will be great in a league that’s all about the short-to-intermediate passing game.
He’s not the easiest to bring down after the catch:
- Excellent vision
- Feel for space
- He’s determined
Per Pro Football Focus, Bernard had 340 yards of YAC in 2025 (average of 6.3 yards per catch).
Second coming of Deebo Samuel?
No question ⎯
Bernard is built in that hybrid “wide receiver/running back jack-of-all-trades” mold like Samuel, who played for the 49ers for the first six years of his NFL career.

Daniel Kelly’s Final 2026 NFL Draft Grade: First-Round (I would select him)
Projected by NFL Mock Draft Database to be a Second Round prospect as of March 9, 2026
Alabama Wide Receiver Germie Bernard Leaves an Impression (2024: 13 games evaluated)
2025 game film evaluated: FSU, UL-Monroe, Wisconsin, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, Oklahoma, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Indiana (click to view games watched to form this evaluation)
*I’m giving Bernard the benefit of the doubt due to the erratic quarterbacking he dealt with having Simpson as his starter this season.
2026 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Looked like an NFL veteran receiver playing college football. Strong. Thicker thighs. Easy-to-find target. Methodical and seasoned route runner. Smooth. Polished. Glides. Good eye discipline. Soft hands. Confident catcher. Good concentration and field awareness. Walks the tightrope along the sidelines. Often overcomes the first tackling attempt after catches. No burst. Can hold coverage and clear out areas for other intended receivers—below-average deep game.
Final words
Bernard is a chain mover.
