Luther Burden III on Finances, Charity & Staying Healthy

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Fans are used to hearing news about players that affects their performance as athletes. This makes it even more interesting when we learn about their interests as people, too.

Mizzou wide receiver Luther Burden III recently got real about his experiences with finances, charity, and staying healthy.

Here are some of the details…

Burden’s most recent Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal is with Commerce Bank. He first joined forces with them last July and has continued promoting that financial institution.

Last week Burden sat down with them and shared some of his thoughts and experiences about the importance of charity, how he handles money, as well as managing his health and well-being.

Take a look at the full interview here.

Burden says that one of his main financial goals is to give back to his community.

“Whether it’s time or money, I know that’s the kind of investment that changes people’s lives,” he stated.

He also shared some advice for fans regarding charitable donations.

Burden’s community contributions

“Actually, Commerce Bank taught me a couple of things about that,” said Burden. “I’d definitely say that if you’re trying to find a cause to get behind, start by figuring out what you really care about. List the stuff that matters to you and why it’s important. It could be anything from fighting a disease to supporting schools in your area. I’m proud to work with the Demetrious Johnson Foundation.”

Former Mizzou and NFL player Demetrious Johnson founded the Foundation in 1993 to help underprivileged children. Johnson passed away in 2022, but his foundation lives on with players like Burden.

With the Foundation, Burden has participated in several charitable events like paying grocery shoppers’ bills and holding a free youth camp. He also made an appearance at Commerce Bank’s Drive Up Pups program last summer.

“Ah, man — that was so much fun,” Burden said about his experience at the event. “Ghost, my dog, and I visited a Commerce drive-thru, and he received a treat. We even posted a pic of him with the treat in his mouth on Instagram. He looks forward to it every time.

Every July through September, Commerce Banks hosts a drive-thru where individuals can bring their dogs and get a free treat. Plus, for every photo posted on Instagram using the #DriveUpPups hashtag, the bank donates $10 to animal charities in the surrounding area.

More information about the event can be found here.

How healthy living leads to healthy spending

Aside from finances, Burden also discussed how taking care of himself leads to better financial habits.

“Here’s what I think,” Burden shared. “Healthy habits equal fewer medical bills. Eating right, staying active, and managing stress keep you out of the doctor’s office. Being healthy also makes you more productive. You’ll have more energy to crush it in the classroom and on the field.

“I wouldn’t have the energy to perform like I do if I wasn’t taking care of myself. I know it can be hard for people, but if at all possible, ditch the bad habits — you know, like smoking or heavy drinking. You’ll save money and lock in lower life and health insurance premiums.”

The interview is a great example of how healthy habits have positive aspects on not just the body, but the mind, as well.

“Real talk, prioritizing your health isn’t just about feeling good — it’s a smart money move!”
