There’s been a lot of noise about University of Miami transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, so I knew I needed to do work on him. That meant going back and studying what he put on tape at Duke last season before he transferred.

Did Mensah have his moments in 2025?

Yes.

But he tried to do too much. He plays like he thinks he’s better than he is.

Projecting quarterbacks into the NFL is tricky. There are four kinds of quarterback prospects. 1) Blue-chip franchise types, 2) Backup types with legitimate franchise upside that need time to develop, 3) Career backup prospects, and 4) Guys who aren’t showing they have what it takes to develop into starters or No. 2s, No. 3s, or practice-squad types.

Which category does Mensah fall into out of those four aforementioned categories?

Mensah is borderline between 3 and 4.

Mensah absolutely did not show that he has the traits that project as a successful NFL starter on his 2025 Duke game film.

But…

But…

Consensus draft media is already projecting him as a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft (NFL Mock Draft Database).

Not sure what that projection is based on, but it can’t be based on Mensah’s full body of work on his 2025 game film.

No way.

Struggles to get the ball out of his hand

With the pass-rushing demons who play in the NFL, it’s that much more important that NFL quarterbacks can get the ball out of their hand quickly.

Mensah struggled with that, and he struggled with that against college-level competition. The NFL is only faster and more complex.

What was Mensah’s time to throw in 2025?

Per Pro Football Focus: 2.91 seconds

That’s not terrible, and it isn’t good. Mensah tends to hold the ball too long, “trying to make things happen.”

Ball security issues

This is another big one when it comes to projecting college quarterback prospects to the NFL. Ball security is paramount. It’s important for starters, and it’s that much more important for backups. Not all backups can come into a game and make dynamic plays, but it’s also important that they don’t cost their teams games either.

In addition to the six interceptions Mensah threw last season⎯

I also chicken-scratched 40 of his passes that were broken up (PBUs) in these 14 games. That’s an average of 2.85 PBUs per game. Not only that, but Mensah got strip-sacked several times.

Concerning.

What were the biggest positives?

  • Competitiveness
  • Good eye discipline
  • Comfortable reading pass coverage (regularily got to his second throwing option)
  • Doesn’t overdo it running the football (2025: 59 carries)
  • Good job protecting his body when he runs (low injury risk)

NFL projection

At this point, I am projecting Mensah as a practice squad prospect.

He needs to learn how to play within himself and within his limitations. The bottom line is that he shows average athletic ability, playing speed, and arm strength.

There’s only so much he can do.

Daniel Kelly’s 2026 Spring Grade: Seventh-Round (I would select him)

Projected by NFL Mock Draft Database to be a First-Round prospect as of June 15, 2026

2025 game film evaluated: Elon, Illinois, Tulane, NCSU, Syracuse, CAL, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UCONN, Virginia, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia, and ASU (click to view games watched to form this evaluation)

+20 air yards: 31/75 (41.3%)

2027 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Boring prospect. Clapping cadence. Shotgun formation. Heavy RPO. Ends up out of structure too often by choice or he’s forced to. Decent behind the line of scrimmage mobility. Some improv. Inconsistent throwing mechanics (upper and lower body). Erratic footwork. Can put too much arm and hips into his throws. Sidearm release occasionally. Mixed results rolling out. Allows himself to become too overcrowded in the pocket at times—average pocket awareness. Sometimes swallowed by pass rush (27 sacks). Throws with average to below-average anticipation. Average ball placement. Throws some air balls. Questionable vision and decision-making. Tends to put too much air under deep passes.

What to watch for during the 2026 college football season

1. Time to throw?

2. Ball security?

3. Trying to do too much?
