Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones Has All The Tools to Succeed
First Round Mock’s Rajvir Bal has looked at Virginia Tech quarterback (QB) Kyron Drones and feels he has what it takes to succeed in the NFL.

Over the next several months, mainstream media will write and talk about many “big-name QBs” in the 2025 NFL Draft cycle. You will constantly hear names like Sheduer Sanders (Colorado), Quinn Ewers (Texas), and Carson Beck (Georgia).
Those guys will be mentioned in mock drafts, scouting reports, and they will be all over social media.
However, here at First Round Mock, our job is to go deeper and see what the game film says. Sometimes this means finding a “lesser known” (not as highly publicized for whatever reason) prospect who is showing strong potential to succeed in the NFL.
Meet Virginia Tech’s QB1, Kyron Drones
Background
This prospect attended high school in Texas where he was a three-star recruit (247Sports). He committed to Baylor in April of 2020. Drones didn’t see much playing time there completing 14 of 23 passes (60.9%) for 219 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He added eight carries for 49 yards (6.1 yards per carry average) and two touchdowns on the ground.
From there, Drones transferred to Virginia Tech, where he took over as the starter in week three of last season:
2023:
- 166 completions
- 285 attempts (58.2%)
- 2,084 yards
- 17 touchdowns
- Three interceptions
- 166 carries for 818 yards (4.9 yards per carry average) and five touchdowns
Drones measures in the 33rd percentile for height and the 79th for weight (nfldraftbuzz.com).

Rajvir Bal’s 2025 NFL Draft Grade: Second-Round (I would select him)

The Good
While watching Drones, one word instantly pops into my mind: CRAFTY. He’s an opportunist and he’s constantly turning nothing into something. Rarely does he roll over in the pocket and accept a bad play. Oftentimes, he can get out of these rough situations because of his pro-level mechanics. His footwork and throwing motion already fool me into believing I’m watching an NFL QB. His feel for the game is impressive, and I think he is such a great improviser because of his intuition. He has a good arm ⎯good speed and velocity on his throws and delivers darts to his receivers (or as I like to call them, Drone Strikes). He’s also a talented runner and thrives on the read option.
The Bad
Drones is very raw. His mentality seems to be “swing for the fences” but he doesn’t have the level of accuracy he needs to deliver consistently on the long ball. Although he’s great at avoiding sacks, pressure gets to him, and sometimes leads to bad decisions. His chemistry with his receivers at Virginia Tech seemed off, and I’m not sure who to blame for it.
Final Thoughts For Now
This prospect receives an early second-round grade from me because of his natural talent and significant tools.
Drones is an intriguing day-two potential starter for teams who want to invest in their future.
Rajvir Bal is a high school student from the Virginia area. He grew up a rabid Washington Redskins fan, attending more than 30 games, and has enjoyed the team’s high points and low points throughout his life. He plays varsity football and basketball. Rajvir has taken an interest in the NFL Draft since middle school when his team picked Montez Sweat and Dwayne Haskins in the first round. His favorite NFL player ever flips between Rob Gronkowski and Brett Favre, and his favorite athlete is LeBron James. He has been writing his own scouting reports since 2020, and is excited for the opportunities FirstRoundMock provides.
