It’s a Question of Surrounding Talent: Carson Beck, QB, Georgia

First Round Mock’s William Yanish unpacks the game film of Georgia quarterback (QB) Carson Beck and puts a grade on the Bulldogs’ starter.

I talk about the level of competition in college football a lot. It is a facet of the game that just cannot be ignored.

I am equally weary of how stacked some of these teams can become.

Who can forget when the Bulldogs laid the wood to TCU (65-7) in the 2023 National Championship game?

Stetson Bennett was Georgia’s QB and he went on to become the Rams’ fourth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Fourth-Round.

That’s what I mean when I wonder just how stacked Georgia is compared to the rest of the college football landscape.

With Bennett moving on to the NFL, Beck got his shot. How did he do?

Background

Beck tore it up and Georgia posted a 13-1 record during the 2023 season.

What was his production?

  • 302 completions/417 attempts
  • 72.4% completion percentage
  • 3,941 yards
  • 9.5-yard average
  • 24 touchdowns
  • 6 interceptions

He added another 116 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Not too shabby, but…

Probably not the way Georgia had hoped the season would end. After losing the SEC Championship to the Crimson Tide 27-24, the Bulldogs ended by defeating the Seminoles 63-3 in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

The season ended without playing for the National Championship.

The Yanish Report

Long, lean, and lanky body. Solid overall body mechanics head-to-toe. Sneaky mobility. Picks up what yards he can, when he can. Arm strength ++. Adjusts ball velocity and touch as needed. Every throw type, will not wow you. Accuracy is good. Ball placement is decent. Manipulates defenses with his eyes. Decent field vision. For the number of pass breakups (PBUs) that occur, he has good overall ball security. Overall, he is well-equipped for the next level. Teamwork needed. Quiet leadership. The team that picks him needs stars. Concise. Consistent.

For the win

Beck is one of the more consistent talents I have seen recently in college football.

This isn’t so much a question of whether he can play at the next level, it’s a question of which team he will end up on in the 2025 NFL Draft. I think he will be a starter at the next level. From there, it will come down to the supporting cast around him. It will come down to fit.

Do I have a comp?

When I watch Beck, I cannot help being reminded of a more accurate version of Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

That is where this evaluation will peak and conclude (for now).

My BIG three questions

1. Can he prove himself to be a winner to finish his college career?

2. Will he distance himself from the other QBs in this year’s class?

3. What would he look like without so many stars around him?
