Many scouts and analysts thought Olumuyiwa (Olu) Fashanu would declare for the 2023 NFL draft.

However, he decided to stay at Penn State for another season instead and threw caution to the wind when it came to a chance of injury.

Fashanu said at that time (nittanylionswire.com), “Although playing in the NFL is a goal of mine, there is still more that I want to achieve personally and collectively as a program,” Fshanu said in his released statement on his Twitter account on Monday evening. “After several conversations with my parents and coaches, I will be returning to Penn State for the 2023 season.”

Upon evaluating the 21-year-old on 2023 game film, the versatile offensive tackle is the best in his class in almost every category.

2023 Review:

Fashanu was voted as team captain in 2023 (gopsusports.com) and the site noted that in 382 pass-blocking attempts, he allowed no sacks and 11 pressures. Fashanu was selected first-team All-American by the Associated Press and second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.

2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report:

Possesses the ideal height-weight-length combination of an NFL offensive tackle, showcasing elite body mass and strength as a whole. He’s a young tackle who displays great football IQ and instincts against his defenders. Demonstrates natural athleticism in both pass protection and run blocking.

As a run blocker, his athleticism allows him to execute inline-reach blocks, which lets him get to the second level in a hurry. Has great short area quickness that makes it easy to adjust blocking angles. This allows him to get underneath his defenders and create a balanced foundation.

As for pass protection, he has good fluidity in the hips, reaching his sets quickly and setting up for his opposition. He has a variety of counter moves against speed and power rushers. His hand and lower body strength, along with his quickness and IQ allow him to be one step ahead in both the running game and pass protection.

Weaknesses: The offensive tackle displays a few weaknesses. One aspect of his play that should be corrected is his inconsistency in terms of pad level. It’s too high at times in both the run and pass game. He also seems to lack trust in his length, which makes him overcorrect his blocks at times.

Summary:

Fashanu has the most complete physical tools and packaging system in the 2024 NFL Draft class. He’s long, strong and a powerful blocker who also brings elite short-area mobility. He also has great natural balance and exceptional lower body strength to finish blocks. His footwork, hand technique, leverage, and instincts dictate that he is going to be a day-one starting tackle in the NFL.

Who will he remind us of?

Hall of Fame 11-year Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas.

Colton just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science at the United States Sports Academy. He has previous coaching experience as a former offense and defensive line coach at a local high school. While performing those duties, he also worked at PFF( Pro Football Focus) for a brief moment of time. He currently develops scouting reports here at firstroundmock.com. His aspirations are to become an NFL Scout/GM in the future.
