Day 1 Senior Bowl Standouts & Under-Performers
Both the American and National team held practices on Tuesday, January 30 for the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl, and NFL Draft Analyst Colton Edwards broke it down for First Round Mock.
Day one in Mobile, Alabama is in the books.
Who stood out?
Who didn’t look too hot?
These are the questions everyone is scrambling to answer about Tuesday’s practice.
Their official measurements (height, weight, and length) from the event will be listed.
Senior Bowl practices continue Wednesday, and Thursday this week, with more live coverage of the practices on Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network/ESPNU/ESPN App, and then 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network/ESPN2/ESPN App. (The game is on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network).
Standouts:
Gabe Hall, DT, Baylor: 6’6″ – 290 Pounds – 34 3/8″ Arms – 84″ Wing
A true disruptor during team drills and 1v1’s.
Hall showcased a handful of pass-rush moves, making it hard to predict for the offensive line. At the start of team play, he shut down the interior against the run. Displayed explosion off the line of scrimmage with good hand placement and low pad level. Overall, he performed exceptionally.
Notable Rep:
Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo: 6’0″ – 195 Pounds – 31 1/8″ Arms – 75 6/8″ Wing
The lockdown defensive back of the day.
Every rep and route, Mitchell stayed inside the hip pocket not allowing any separation for the opposing wide receiver. He was consistent, smooth, controlled, and showed elite balance and fluidity through transitions. Some are already starting to discuss his potential rise to CB1.
Notable Rep:
Jackson Powers-Johnson, IOL, Oregon: 6’3″ – 334 Pounds – 31 1/8″ Arms – 79″ Wing
Powers-Johnson showcased his versatility today, taking reps at both center and guard.
He was undoubtedly dominant in both pass protection and the running game. Displayed great lower-body strength and technique against rushers. Today alone may raise him into the first round.
Notable Rep:
Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State: 6’5″ – 332 Pounds – 33 3/8″ Arms – 81 4/8″ Wing
Started the day by shutting down Laiatu Latu in the 1v1 sessions.
This is a BIG DEAL.
Fuaga was consistently dominant in the trenches against elite pass rushers while opening up lanes in the running game. Showcased a quick release and natural balance, not becoming too high during his pass sets. He is a lock for a top-20 selection.
Notable Rep:
Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia: 5’11” – 187 Pounds – 30 1/8″ Arms – 72 6/8″ Wing
Showcased his route-running effectiveness all day.
McConkey created separation against both inside and outside leverage and didn’t have one bad rep during practice. His short-area quickness was dangerous and on full display. After today, he has a good chance of sneaking close to the first round.
Notable Rep:
Under-Performers:
Isaiah Adams, IOL, Illinois: 6’4″ – 316 Pounds – 33 2/8″ Arms – 82 2/8″ Wing
An inconsistent day in both the running game and the passing game.
Adams was quickly beaten inside multiple times, either not getting off the ball quickly enough or staying too high. In the running game, there were a few times, linebackers were able to cross him. Let’s see how he responds on day two.
Brenden Rice, WR, USC: 6’2″ – 212 Pounds – 32 5/8″ Arms – 78 3/8″ Wing
The son of Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice came into the Senior Bowl starting to gain some publicity.
There are some concerns.
Rice had a few drops, struggling in the contest on Tuesday. Lack of burst off the snap and not being able to create any separation. Day two should bring more bright spots for the young receiver.
Devontez Walker, WR, North Carolina: 6’1″ – 197 Pounds – 32 6/8″ Arms – 79 2/8″ Wing
Displayed the same concerns and inconsistencies as Brenden Rice did.
Multiple drops for Walker⎯ failed to create separation and unimpressive physicality. Expected more quickness as he was locked down all day by notably Notre Dame CB, Cam Hart.
Johnny Dixon, CB, Penn State: 5’11” – 192 Pounds – 29 5/8″ Arms – 72″ Wing
This cornerback was overly physical and handsy, resulting in multiple pass interference calls.
Dixon was beaten consistently but not due to the lack of physicalness. I expect him to come out and turn that around on day two.
T’Vondre Sweat, DT, Texas: 6’4″ – Did Not Weigh – 33 5/8” Arms
Showcased that he is not a three-down defensive tackle due to his lack of pass-rushing ability.
Multiple times Sweat was locked down during 1v1’s including against Arkansas center Beaux Limmer. He’ll continue that development on day two.
Colton just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science at the United States Sports Academy. He has previous coaching experience as a former offense and defensive line coach at a local high school. While performing those duties, he also worked at PFF(Pro Football Focus) for a brief moment of time. He currently develops scouting reports here at firstroundmock.com. He aspires to become an NFL Scout/GM in the future.
