High-profile, great athletes do not always translate to offspring that have the same dynamics. Especially if they are to be the caliber of a man who likes to call himself Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders.

However, after the whole college football world was chastising the coach for tearing apart a University of Colorado football team that went 1-11 last year.

Now, after an opening weekend thrashing of TCU, a team that challenged Georgia last year for the Division I National Championship, it seems everyone was wrong.

So very wrong.

Colorado vs. TCU

The full game can be seen by clicking here.

In a thriller of a game that came down to the last play this past weekend, Sanders was the difference maker.

It was a clash between two high-octane Aid-Raid style offenses and by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, Coach Prime and TCU Head Coach Sonny Dykes had figured out each other’s weaknesses and were going blow-for-blow until the clock expired.

TCU running back Trey Sanders was tearing chunks out of Colorado’s defensive line, or lack thereof. Then Sanders began dropping dimes for massive chunk plays. It all ended with him throwing for a school-record 510 yards and four touchdowns. Four receivers on Colorado had 100-plus yard games. Had those receivers had caught everything they were supposed to, it would have been 600-plus. Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter is all that just as they have been saying. He went full old-school Iron Man football with 60-plus snaps in the first half alone.

What Sanders looked like on game film

Sanders might not be the flashy, glitzy, dynamic player that his daddy was, but this kid knows what he is doing. His competitive nature and leadership were on full display. Sanders showed old-school throwing mechanics and even some backpedaling dropbacks, revealing he had been exposed to QB mechanics of yesteryear.

His quiet confidence spoke volumes about how he had been raised.

Sanders is every bit of a player who can succeed. The toughness and the gray matter that exist in him is that of a seasoned professional. His 4.6 speed and his touch passing arm are just enough tools to keep him from capsizing at the next level.

It’s not the size of the ship, it’s how you sail it.

The offense that the University of Colorado runs is a juggernaut that was custom-built for Sanders by the late, great Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. Leach is actually also the guy that gave Dykes his biggest break in coaching.

Coach Prime explains how Mike Leach helped him with his offense.

Looking ahead

What will this mean when draft time rolls around?

There is something alive and well behind the scenes. The word on the street is that Colorado doesn’t even have the money that they promised to pay Coach Prime, yet. Is he going to escort his QB1 into the NFL when this is all over?

I’m going to be watching what Colorado is doing this season. I am intrigued at this point. Coach Prime could make some noise.

Any given Saturday.
