Quinn Ewers – Quintessential QB
First Round Mock’s Victoria Jonach takes a look at what Texas quarterback (QB) Quinn Ewers has been up to off the field.
Quinn Ewers is making quite a splash among the college football community.
The Longhorns’ QB is well known for his work on the field with Texas. However, he has also made waves in the world of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). Now, Ewers is showing off his selfless side, working among the Manning’s as a counselor at the 2023 Manning Passing Academy (MPA).
In the world of football, nearly everyone who knows anything about the sport is familiar with the Manning family. With two brothers (Peyton and Eli) and a father (Archie) contributing 47 seasons combined for the National Football League, they are definitely established. Now, Peyton and Eli’s college-age nephew Arch is playing for Texas along with Ewers.
About the camp
The Manning Family and Ewers weren’t the only ones to work the camp that took place June 22-25. Almost 50 other college signal-callers also participated. This includes Kentucky’s QB Devin Leary, NC’s QB Drake Maye, Huskies’ QB, Michael Penix Jr., and more. The full list is here.
The camp itself is for football players between grades 8 and 12. Counselors such as Ewers worked to help the next generation of athletes improve their skills. Through drills, team-building exercises, strength conditioning, and a Friday Night Lights (FNL) skills competition between the counselors, campers were sure to learn something.
Not to mention it must have been exciting working with some of the most prominent college football players.
Ewers is featured in the video below, participating in another part of the camp, the MPA Golf Cart Run. This is where campers must attempt to hit moving carts with footballs. The 20-year-old can be seen driving one of the carts across the field as a ball strikes his vehicle. He is clearly not afraid to be right in the middle of the action.
Ewers shines at Friday Night Lights competition
The FNL competition was where Ewers was shining, with attention from Sports Illustrated, On3, BVM Sports, and other notable publications.
“Remember the confident quarterback who had Alabama’s defense on its heels before he exited the game with an injury? That’s the Ewers that showed up to Friday evening’s quarterback competition in South Louisiana,” On3 summarized. “Ewers throws an effortless ball and showed the ability to hit on a variety of passes.
Although Ewers had a rocky start to the 2022 season, he has definitely made up for it. Throwing for only 15 TDs total last season, he wasn’t bouncing back quickly after his injury. However, he solidified his position as starting QB by the spring Orange-White game at Royal-Memorial stadium. There, he completed 16 of 23 passes while contributing 195 yards and one touchdown.
“Ewers is the present in Austin, and the upside is clear,” On3 also noted.
Controversy between star QBs?
Many might believe that with talented players like Ewers and Manning on the same team, there must be controversy. Although, the Texas atmosphere seems to be the opposite.
“Me and Arch are great buddies,” Ewers said at the Manning Passing Academy. “I’ve known him — I got to know him pretty well in the recruiting process. We’ve only grown in our relationship,” he recalled. A friendship like that is bound to help, rather than harm the team as a whole.
Off the field, Ewers is proving to be a good influence on his teammates. This fall, though, everyone will have eyes on the starting QB to see if he can lead his team on the field as well as off.
