Interstellar: Just Who is JRP? -John Rhys Plumlee, QB UCF

Reading Time: 3 minutes

There are mixed reviews on University of Central Florida (UCF) quarterback (QB) John Rhys Plumlee, find out what First Round Mock’s William Yanish sees happening.

Intrigue.

That was the first word that came to mind for Plumlee.

Get this

He’s an athlete who played a baseball game with two RBIs and a triple, before jumping on a golf cart for a ride to the stadium to play a spring football game.

Who is this?

Deion Sanders 2.0?

How insane is that?

Background

He simply goes by his initials, “JRP.”

That’s what he calls himself.

Initially, he committed to play at Georgia his first season, in hopes of playing QB.

He then hit the transfer portal to Ole Miss. After splitting time with QB Matt Corral, he played wide receiver (WR) just so he could stay on the field.

…then another transfer.

This time landing at UCF to play QB.

Depending on who you talk to, his 40-yard-dash-time is somewhere in the range of 4.2 and 4.3 seconds.

How about his on-field football speed?

That is something that will leave you in awe.

A tad bit undersized at 6-foot-0, 200 pounds, JRP doesn’t play like it.

Tempo?

The way he plays fits the expression that “Dynamite comes in small packages.”

Bottom line – – he absolutely has the skills and the drive to become an NFL QB.

What’s going on within?

One thing that I always question with a draft prospect is whether or not they have football in their hearts.

The more I dig up on JRP, all I find is desire and ambition.

The potential that he carries inside of him is off-the-charts.

JRP will do anything to play in the league until he is given the opportunity to be a starting QB.

My mentor, Daniel Kelly of First Round Mock, has always told me “Stick to the dynamic ones.” JRP’s game film and highlights absolutely scream dynamic.

The Yanish Report:

Live arm. Next level off-platform throws. Accuracy and ball-placement doesn’t suffer much when feet are not set. Need to see more deep throws for proper assessment. Adequate arm-strength, good zip when needed. Good footwork with rhythm and timing. Bait’s defenders extremely well when selling play-action and run-pass option (RPO). Shows extreme football IQ. FAST. Needs more shake and bake during cuts. Mostly just outruns defenders. Uber athletic.

From the positions he played in Lane Kiffin’s high-tempo offense at Ole Miss to the starting at QB at UCF, he knows the field from plenty of different viewpoints.

Doing his best Michael Vick impression at Ole Miss and UCF, this kid could be special.

This isn’t so much a scouting report, this is a warning. I am putting the entire draft community on notice for the 2024 NFL Draft. JRP has arrived.

My BIG Three Questions

1. How will his evolution be affected by UCF’s switch to the Big-12 with better competition?

2. Will he get national attention for a run at the Heisman Trophy?

3. Can he cut down on the hits, and live to fight another play?

How JRP stacked up and game film reviewed

William Yanish III is a life long football fan. He’s from the little town of Crawford, Colorado. Along the way, he’s lived in Dutch Harbor, Alaska and Brookings, Oregon. Quarterback Joe Montana was his idol growing up. A little bit of CTE from life’s adventures killed his dreams as a football player. Now, he is an aspiring writer and Draft Analyst at FirstRoundMock.com. He’s a fanatic with a dream, which is coming true.
