Could Joey Porter Jr. End Up Playing for the Baltimore Ravens?
Joey Porter Jr. is a name that should automatically turn heads in the NFL.
The Penn State cornerback possesses the length, athleticism, and the pedigree to succeed at the next level. Standing at 6’2”, and 200 pounds, he is a long, rangy prospect whom quarterbacks, and receivers, alike, should fear, like a clinger at homecoming.
Will Porter be a first-round pick?
I have seen him go as high as a top-5. CBS Sports has him going No. 27 overall to the Baltimore Ravens.
That would be the ultimate coup considering the fact that his father is a Steelers’ legend, and one of the most feared defenders of our generation.
Should Porter be a first-round pick?
Let us get into that…
Porter uses his long frame to engulf his targets. With 4.47 speed and long arms, he excels in man coverage. He is sticky, aggressive, and extremely handsy. At times, he will draw pass-interference, and personal-foul penalties. That is something that he definitely needs to work on.
One problem is, as it stands, he is a liability in the run game. His athleticism always keeps him right near the ball. The problem is a lack of aggression in run support. He is a player who knows his assignments, but yet he hesitates to engage at times.
From what I see on film, I believe he is completely coachable, and could help an entire defense evolve. He is a natural born leader.
Personally, I think Porter could be used to counteract coaches who are trying to create mismatches with bigger receivers and tight ends. He is a matchup nightmare who could be an equalizer and be used all over the field. A one man, tight end wrecking crew?
Fuggedaboutit 😉
Speed kills and so does a hot temper
Speedy receivers can be his downfall.
In 2021, vs. Garrett Wilson, from the Ohio State University, Wilson did get the best of him during the matchup. The frustration was apparent, and he almost lost his cool more than once. There were penalties too.
With discipline and vision, he could fulfill his potential as a game-changer. Until then, it is like the great Rex Ryan said, “Potential is just a fancy French word meaning, You ain’t done nothing yet.” I really believe the sky is the limit for him.
Porter is a different breed. I would pound on the table to get him on my team in the first-round.
A lion never has to tell you that he is a lion.
The Penn State game film I reviewed was 2021 Auburn, 2021 Ohio State and 2022 Purdue (click to watch games viewed to form this evaluation).
